As September starts, you'll find that major mattress merchants grant early access to their Labor Day sales. If you've already got a particular mattress in mind, and you're just waiting for it to go on sale, then you should use this opportunity to beat the crowds and make a major saving.
Before I started as H&G's specialist sleep writer, I was a price tracker. I used to spend eight hours a day scouring the sites of the major mattress brands, waiting for deals to drop. I know what makes the best mattress and I know where – and when − to get it for the best price. Still, with so much listed for so little, it's easy to feel spoiled for choice.

Saatva Classic Mattress | Was $2,095.00, now $1,795.00 at Saatva
Saatva recently upped their prices, so I'm very pleased to see a $300 discount on their best bed. Out of the dozens of beds we've tested, this innerspring mattress is the best, with top scores across the board for comfort, support, and cooling.
You can find more detail in our Saatva Classic Mattress review.
Nectar Memory Foam Mattress | Was $1,099.00, now $649.00 at Nectar
If you're a side sleeper, and you appreciate a softer surface, or you suffer from chronic pain and you're crying out for pressure relief, I suggest you sleep on a memory foam mattress. This one is as good as it gets, made to mold to the shape of your body and cushion your hips, knees, neck and shoulders.
You can find more detail in our Nectar Memory Foam Mattress review.
WinkBeds Luxury Hybrid Mattress | Was $1,799.00, now $1,499.00 at WinkBeds
When you buy a hybrid mattress, you get all the plush comfort of memory foam, plus the airflow and support of an innerspring. Our expert tester, Aleenah, sleeps on her stomach, so she appreciates the excellent edge support you get from the WinkBeds Luxury Hybrid Mattress.
You can find more detail in our WinkBeds Luxury Hybrid Mattress review.
Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt Mattress | Was $3,399, now $3,199 at Tempur-Pedic
With excellent motion isolation and outstanding edge support, the Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt is one of the best mattresses we've ever tested, but I normally hesitate to recommend it because it's so expensive. Tempur-Pedic discounts are never deep, but you could save $200 when you shop the Labor Day mattress sales.
You can find more detail in our Tempur-Pedic ProAdapt Mattress review.
Bed in a box deals
The best box mattresses are already affordable. When you shop the mattress sales, you can save more money to spend on sheets, shams, and blankets: everything you need to upgrade your bed.
DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress | Was $1,483.00, now $665.00 at DreamCloud
For the optimal balance of cost, comfort, and convenience, try the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress. For just $665 for a Queen, you get outstanding motion isolation, excellent edge support, and medium-firm comfort to suit all sleepers.

Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress | Was $2,305.00, now $1,499.00 at Bear
I just got back from a mattress testing trip to the 3Z factory in Phoenix, Arizona. I sampled more than 40 beds, but the Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress was in my top three. As a hybrid mattress, this bed combines the plush comfort of memory foam with the support and airflow of an innerspring. When you shop the Labor Day mattress sales, you can get it for $850 less than its MSRP.
You can find more detail in our Bear Elite Hybrid Mattress review.
Emma Original Mattress | Was $1,159.00, now $579.00 at Emma
You can save a whopping 50% on this memory foam mattress when you shop the August mattress sales. Like any memory foam mattress, the Emma Original sleeps a little warm, and its edge support leaves a little to be desired, but it's soft and supportive. If you'd like a little plush comfort for less, this is where to get it.
You can find more detail in our Emma Original Mattress review.
Bear Natural Mattress | Was $2,305.00, now $1,499.00 at Bear
This natural latex mattress is breathable and bouncy, ideal for hot sleepers, anyone who struggles with mobility, and anyone in need of pressure relief. With any latex mattress, you get a bit of motion transfer, so I wouldn't recommend this mattress for light sleepers.
You can find more detail in our Bear Natural Mattress review.
Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress | Was $2,373.80, now $1,732.85.00 at Helix
When you shop with our code H&G27, you can save more than $600 on the Helix Dusk Luxe Mattress. Our expert tester, Alex, reckons it's too firm for side sleepers, but back and stomach sleepers should appreciate the solid support.

Organic mattress deals
If you're prepared to spend on a mattress, you should consider investing in the best organic mattress to stand the test of time. These mattresses are made from sustainable materials that are good for your body and kind to the planet. They're often incredibly luxurious, but they're so expensive that I recommend buying them in the sales.
Avocado Green Mattress | Was $1,999.00, now $1,699.00 at Avocado
Filled with organic Talalay latex and topped with organic wool and cotton, the Avocado Green Mattress is a dream for eco-conscious shoppers. This bed comes in three styles − firm for back and stomach sleepers, plush for pressure relief, and medium for everybody else.
You can find more detail in our Avocado Green Mattress review.
PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Mattress | Was $3,149.00, now $1,799.00 at PlushBeds
Springy and responsive, this organic mattress comes highly recommended by orthopedic specialists and chiropractors. You can get it in nine sizes, three heights, and two firmnesses to meet your sleep needs and room size.
You can find more detail in our PlushBeds Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress review.
Woolroom Hebridean 3000 Mattress | Was $3,098.00, now $2,168.60 at Woolroom
Contrary to popular opinion, organic wool is neither scratchy nor stifling, but breathable and durable. One of our expert testers, Sophie, sampled the Woolroom Hebridean 3000 Mattress in the middle of spring, and she couldn't believe how cool it kept her.
You can find more detail in our Woolroom Hebridean 3000 Mattress review.
Birch Luxe Natural Mattress | Was $2,623.80, now $1,967.80 at Birch
This natural mattress is non-toxic and eco-friendly. The Birch Luxe Natural Mattress incorporates GOTS and GREENGUARD Gold-certified materials for sustainable comfort, and it still comes in a neat little box for your convenience.
You can find more detail in our Birch Luxe Natural Mattress review.
Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress | Was $2,395.00, now $2,095.00 at Saatva
Supple and responsive, the Saatva Latex Hybrid Mattress is just the thing to bear your body weight and take the pressure off your aching joints. For an organic mattress, it's not even that expensive, especially with a $300 discount in the mattress sales.

Mattress topper and protector deals
You might not want, need, or feel able to afford a brand new bed, even in the mattress sales. Not to worry: you can transform the feel of your bed with one thick layer of foam. The best mattress topper could soften up your sleeping surface or reinforce support for a fraction of the price. The best mattress protector should elongate the life of your mattress, minimizing the effect of spills and stains.
Tempur-Adapt Tempur-Topper | Was $419.00, now $251.40 at Tempur-Pedic
With excellent motion isolation and near-perfect pressure relief, this is the best mattress topper we've tested. Like everything at Tempur-Pedic, it's very expensive, but you could save 40% when you shop with our code TOPPERS40.
ViscoSoft Select High Density Mattress Topper | Was $279.95, now $209.95 at ViscoSoft
As a recent grad who wrestled with a seriously uncomfortable college bed, I reckon this is the best mattress topper for dorm beds. This topper is plush enough to soften up a firm mattress, yet sufficiently supportive to prevent slipping and sagging. Plus, it's infused with cooling copper to soothe hot sleepers.
Sijo TempTune Mattress Pad | Was $175.00, now $140.00 at Sijo
This thermoregulating mattress pad is designed to meet the needs of hot and cold sleepers living in warm, cool, or temperate climates. The TempTune Mattress Pad is woven from Supima cotton for supple strength and filled with Sijo's secret blend of fibers for heat distribution.
Buffy Plushy Mattress Protector | Was $129.00, now $103.20 at Buffy
This mattress protector feels more like a mattress topper to me. It's soft and squishy enough to transform the feel of your old mattress. This mattress pad is thermoregulating and moisture-wicking to stop sweat from seeping through and staining your bed.
Mattress sales FAQs
Are mattresses always on sale?
Not every mattress is always on sale, but I take your point: it would seem that you can always get a good deal on a mattress. Be warned that not every mattress sale is real: a few of the biggest names in bedding list never-changing 'sales prices' throughout the year in a practice known as price anchoring. If you're keen to spot a good deal from a real fake, it might be worth downloading a reputable price tracker.
Federal holidays like Labor Day and Thanksgiving tend to bring the deepest discounts on bedding. When you take advantage of these sales, you could bag a big-ticket item, such as a mattress, at a bargain price.
When is the best time to buy a mattress?
I've written an entire article answering the question: 'when is the best time to buy a mattress?' If you don't have time to read the whole thing, here are the highlights.
The best time of year to buy a mattress is in winter or early spring, or during a federal holiday. Labor Day is a great time to buy a mattress, as manufacturers start to cut prices to shift old stock and make room for new models. If you shop from my shortlist, you might find even deeper discounts than you saw on Black Friday.
Final thoughts
Once you've bought the best bed, it's time to dress it. When you shop the bedding sales, you can save hundreds of dollars on sheets, shams, quilts, comforters, and everything in between.
If you've got expensive taste, but a tight budget, then I suggest you shop the luxury bedding sales at Bloomingdale's. I've never seen such deep discounts on luxury brands, from Frette to Sferra.
